The medium

Watch Elliot get painted.

Every All Dogs painting is made by code. The painter first works out the dog: its face, clothes, pose and the world around it. Then a brush lays the paint. Each bristle carries a finite load, picks up colour that is still wet, and runs dry on a long stroke; the oil stick catches on the canvas weave.

This page runs that same code in your browser, starting from Elliot's seed, and shows each stroke as the brush makes it. It is not a recording. The sky goes on first, then the moon and the houses, the bicycle, E.T., and Elliot himself.

Painted at 2000 × 1000, which takes about two minutes on a laptop. The painter uses a lot of memory, so a phone may be slow or stop.
